A shocking incident has rocked Canisius Boarding Boys Secondary School in Monze District, Southern Province, after a 15-year-old Grade 11 pupil allegedly stabbed a Grade 12 prefect during a dispute over school cleaning duties.
The incident, which occurred on February 2, 2025, has left both the school community and parents deeply concerned about student discipline and safety within the institution. According to law enforcement officials, the altercation began during the school’s scheduled cleaning period when students were assigned various tasks to maintain the cleanliness of their learning environment.
Eyewitnesses reported that during the session, students were directed to clean the school hall, but the suspect refused to participate. His refusal drew the attention of a senior student, a Grade 12 pupil who also served as a school prefect and hall usher. The prefect decided to follow up on the matter and approached the younger student in his dormitory to inquire about his unwillingness to take part in the activity.
A heated argument quickly ensued between the two students. Tensions escalated when, in the midst of the altercation, the Grade 11 pupil allegedly pulled out a knife from his pocket and, without warning, stabbed the prefect in the stomach. The attack left other students in shock, with some rushing to the scene in an attempt to intervene.
Following the stabbing, the suspect is said to have discarded the knife into a nearby grassy area in an apparent attempt to hide the weapon. However, quick-thinking students searched the area and managed to recover the knife, which was then handed over to the school management as evidence.
The victim sustained a severe wound to the stomach, with injuries extending deep into the intestines, leading to significant blood loss. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, school authorities acted swiftly, transporting the injured student to Chikuni Mission Hospital for emergency medical attention. He was immediately taken into surgery, and medical personnel have since confirmed that his condition is now stable.
Meanwhile, school management reported the matter to the police, leading to the arrest and detention of the Grade 11 suspect. Southern Province Police Commissioner Auxensio Daka confirmed the arrest and stated that investigations into the matter were ongoing. The police are working closely with school authorities to piece together the full details of the incident and determine any further actions that may need to be taken.
The stabbing has left students and teachers at Canisius Boarding Boys Secondary School in shock, with many questioning how such a violent altercation could have taken place within the school premises. Some students expressed fear and concern about their safety, while teachers and administrators are now under pressure to tighten disciplinary measures and ensure that such incidents do not happen again.
The incident also raises broader concerns about the increasing prevalence of violence among students in some schools. Parents and stakeholders in the education sector are calling for stricter regulations on the possession of dangerous objects, such as knives, within school premises. There are also growing calls for enhanced conflict resolution training among students to help prevent disputes from escalating into violence.
Authorities are expected to provide further updates as investigations continue. In the meantime, the school community remains on edge, hoping that the victim will make a full recovery and that justice will be served in the wake of this disturbing incident.
