More than 1,000 University of Zambia (UNZA) workers are preparing to strike following a breakdown in negotiations with the government over K1.4 billion in unpaid dues. The debt, which has accumulated over several years, remains unsettled despite repeated assurances from the authorities.

At a recent press briefing, Likezo Pumulo, President of the University of Zambia Professional Staff Union (UNZAPROSU), announced that workers would proceed with a strike after a ballot vote on the planned lockout, scheduled for Monday, November 11, 2024.

Dr. Andrew Phiri, President of the University of Zambia Lecturers and Researchers Union (UNZALARU), emphasized that the planned lockout is a strategic move to pressure the government into settling the outstanding debt after negotiations stalled.

If the strike goes ahead, it is expected to cause significant disruption to students’ education, as it involves lecturers and other staff members across the university
