A crackdown on unscrupulous traders selling mealie meal at inflated prices has led to the confiscation of dozens of bags of the essential commodity in the district. The joint operation, involving the Monze District Office, Zambia Police Service, and Zambia National Service, targeted traders who were charging exorbitant prices for the subsidized mealie meal.
Residents of Monze expressed their relief at the action taken by authorities. Many had been burdened by the increased cost of living, with the price of mealie meal, a staple food, being a significant contributor. The traders were found to be selling the commodity at K320 and K330 per bag, well above the government-regulated price of K230.
The operation comes in the wake of a stern warning issued by President Hakainde Hichilema last week. The President emphasized that anyone found to be profiteering from the subsidized mealie meal would face legal consequences. His message served as a clear signal to traders who were exploiting the vulnerable population.
The confiscation of the mealie meal bags is a significant step towards ensuring that the commodity is made available to the public at a fair price. It also sends a strong message to other traders who may be tempted to engage in similar practices. As the government continues to prioritize the welfare of its citizens, such actions are crucial in addressing the challenges faced by many Zambians.
