THIEVES TARGET FREEDOM FIGHTERS’ GRAVES IN KABWE

.

The resting place of Zambia’s freedom fighters at Old St. Mary’s Cemetery in Kabwe, Central Province has been vandalised after thieves stole sections of a newly installed perimeter fence surrounding the historic graves.

The National Heritage Conservation Commission (NHCC) has condemned the incident, describing it as a disgraceful, shameful and unacceptable attack on the country’s national heritage.

NHCC Executive Director Kagosi Mwamulowe says the graves are sacred places of remembrance that deserve the highest level of respect and protection.

Mr. Mwamulowe says those who fought for Zambia’s freedom should continue to be honoured in death, just as they were in life.

He has reminded the public that the protection of national heritage sites is provided for under the National Heritage Conservation Commission Act, Cap. 173, which makes it a criminal offence to destroy, excavate, remove, deface or cause unauthorised damage to any declared ancient monument, relic or protected heritage site.

.

Mr. Mwamulowe says the Commission will not hesitate to invoke the law against anyone found desecrating or vandalising protected heritage sites.

The remarks are contained in a statement issued by NHCC Information and Public Relations Manager Ndubi Mvula.
