Police in Kalulushi have arrested a 46-year-old woman of Magum Compound for allegedly assaulting her two biological children, aged 11 and seven.

Copperbelt Division Police Commissioner Rae Hamoonga says the incident happened on September 9 at around 19:00 hours after the children allegedly refused to assist their mother in fetching water.

Mr Hamoonga says the woman later returned home and found that the children had eaten nshima that she had reserved for their father, allegedly angering her and prompting her to pick up a kettle and assault the two children.

The 11-year-old sustained injuries to the eye, head and right hand, while the seven-year-old suffered injuries to the forehead and nose.

The children were rescued by a concerned member of the public and taken to hospital for treatment.

The suspect has since been charged with assaulting a child and is detained at Kalulushi Police Station as investigations continue.

Police have also urged members of the public to protect the privacy of children involved in abuse cases and refrain from sharing their names, photographs or other identifying information on social media.
