Police in Lusaka have arrested a 24-year-old woman of Chainda Compound in connection with the alleged death of her newborn baby.
According to the Zambia Police Service, preliminary investigations indicate that the woman allegedly gave birth around 01:00 hours on Sunday before placing the newborn in a bucket and covering it, resulting in the infant’s death.
Police Public Relations Officer, Godfrey Chilabi says the incident was reported to Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe Police Station by a 20-year-old neighbour, who told police that the suspect had been pregnant for about nine months.
Mr. Chilabi says the baby’s body has been deposited at the University Teaching Hospital Mortuary for a post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.
He adds that the suspect has been apprehended and is receiving medical treatment under police guard while investigations continue.
