The contest for Chipata Central has narrowed weeks before the August 13, 2026 general elections after the Leadership Movement Party candidate withdrawing from the parliamentary race.
Party candidate Syluvias Kamungu has formally exited the contest through a letter to the ECZ District Electoral Officer in Chipata, dated June 22, 2026.
The decision, he says follows a broad consultations with family, supporters and key stakeholders.
Mr. Kamungu framed the withdrawal as a deliberate move due to lack of support and also safeguard unity and advance development in the constituency.
While stepping aside, he thanked his backers for their support and urged Chipata Central residents to participate peacefully in the upcoming elections, reaffirming his commitment to democratic values and an orderly electoral process.
This means the Parliamentary seat only remains with NRPUP candidate Ruth Grand Phiri and UPND candidate George Mwanza.
