A 23-year-old man, David Kotamu, has been detained by police in Kafue District in connection with the alleged murder of an 11-year-old girl, Bertha Mwansa Mumbi.
Police Public Relations Officer Godfrey Chilabi says the incident happened on May 24, 2026, between 14:00 and 16:00 hours in the Chanyanya area of Kafue District, where the victim was allegedly murdered.
Mr.Chilabi says the matter was reported at Kafue Police Station at around 16:40 hours by the victim’s father, Martin Mumbi, aged 51, who reported that his daughter had died under suspicious circumstances.
He says police officers who visited the scene found the child unresponsive and took her to Chanyanya Rural Health Centre, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Chilabi says preliminary investigations indicate that a member of the public found the suspect near Chanyanya Harbour, close to where the victim’s body was later discovered, leading to his apprehension and handover to police.
He says a physical examination of the body revealed bruises on the neck, consistent with strangulation, while the motive behind the alleged offence has not yet been established. The suspect remains in custody as investigations continue.
