DR Congo have held Portugal to a one-all draw in a historic Group K 2026 FIFA World Cup opener at NRG Stadium in Houston.
Portugal drew first blood when João Neves headed home an outswinging cross from Pedro Neto in the sixth minute, giving Cristiano Ronaldo’s side an early advantage.
But DR Congo refused to be overwhelmed, growing stronger as the first half progressed to earn their reward when Yoane Wissa headed in the country’s first ever goal at a FIFA World Cup, to level the scores.
The Leopards then defended with discipline and resolve throughout the second half, denying Portugal the winner and holding firm until the final whistle.
For DR Congo, back on the World Cup stage for the first time in 52 years, this could be regarded as the perfect start to their campaign.
