.

A 61-year-old woman of Mchini Township in Chipata has lost 1,500 chickens after floods hit the district on February 21, 2026.

A total of 251 houses were affected in Mchini, Soweto and Garden townships.

In an interview with Diamond News, Miriam Banda Siwale broke down over the loss, saying the chickens were her only source of income and supported her two children at Mulungushi University.

She has appealed to government and well-wishers for assistance.

Meanwhile, Chipata District Commissioner Elida Banda says the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) will soon begin distributing food and chlorine to prevent disease outbreaks.
