A few months after a man was attacked by a hippopotamus while fishing on the Zambezi River, another man from Sikaunzwe Ward in Kazungula District, Southern Zambia, is nursing deep wounds following a similar attack while fishing on the same river.
The latest victim, Boyd Mwiiba, was reportedly returning from a fishing expedition in a dugout canoe with his friends when they encountered the hippo.
Mwiiba sustained deep cuts to his right thigh in the attack.
Local residents mobilised to rush him to Kazungula District Hospital for medical treatment.
Hippo encounters are a concern in the area, where residents depend on local waterways for fishing and other livelihoods, often using dugout canoes to navigate the streams.
Wildlife authorities are yet to comment on the matter.
