The Energy Regulation Board (ERB) has licensed 205 petroleum transportation fuel tankers under 42 licences and construction permits, representing an investment pledge of more than ZMW 3.74 billion (US$198 million) in Zambia’s energy sector.
ERB Public Relations Manager Namukolo Kasumpa says the approvals cover the renewable energy, downstream petroleum, and general energy works subsectors, reflecting continued investor confidence in the country’s energy industry.
The licences were approved during a meeting of the ERB Licensing Committee held on 15 January 2026. Ms. Kasumpa notes that the approvals demonstrate the effectiveness of the ERB’s regulatory framework in supporting sustainable energy investments.
She explains that licensing the 205 fuel tankers is aimed at strengthening the petroleum supply chain, improving national fuel distribution capacity, and enhancing energy security across the country.
In the downstream petroleum sector, the ERB also approved the construction of three retail service stations and authorised the commissioning of four additional stations, a move expected to improve fuel accessibility and compliance with infrastructure standards.
Meanwhile, in the renewable energy subsector, the Board approved 12 licences for projects focused on the preparation, supply, installation, and maintenance of renewable energy equipment and technologies.
