GOVT REVOKES LCC RESOLUTION TO RENAME SIMON MWEWA LANE MARKET

.

The Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Honourable Gift Sialubalo, has revoked a resolution by the Lusaka City Council to rename the Simon Mwewa Lane Market, citing the need for wider consultation and consensus in matters of public interest.

According to a press statement issued by the Ministry, Mr. Sialubalo has acted under Section 77(i)(b) of the Local Government Act No. 2 of 2019, which grants him authority over certain decisions made by local authorities.

The Lusaka City Council had earlier today, May 8, 2026, during a Full Council Meeting, resolved to rename the Simon Mwewa Lane Market to HH Lumanda Market. However, the Minister has since nullified the decision with immediate effect.

Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development Permanent Secretary (Technical Services), Nicholas Phiri, said the move underscores the importance of inclusive decision making processes at local authority level.

He has emphasized that councils across the country must prioritize consultation and consensus building when handling issues of historical and public significance.

The revocation means the market will retain its current name pending further consultations.
