Tragedy has struck the Third Liberation Party in Chipata after one of its supporters died in a road accident while being transported for the pre-processing of 100 presidential supporters ahead of nominations.
Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba has confirmed the incident to Diamond News stating that a 27-year-old supporter died after falling from a moving vehicle along Great East Road around 10:40 hours opposite Apollo Officers’ Mess.
The deceased has been identified as Zondi Chris Phiri of Roadboard Compound.
According to police, Phiri was among 20 party supporters travelling in a Mitsubishi Canter when the incident occurred.
Mr. Mweemba says the deceased fell from the moving vehicle and was subsequently run over by the rear left tyre.
He sustained fatal head injuries and died while being rushed to Chipata Central Hospital.
The driver of the vehicle, identified as 25-year-old Davison Mbewe of Referendum Compound, and the remaining 19 passengers escaped unhurt.
Police say the Mitsubishi Canter did not sustain any damage in the incident.
The body of the deceased has been deposited in the Chipata Central Hospital mortuary pending a post-mortem examination.
