WOMAN KILLED IN ELEPHANT ATTACK IN LIVINGSTONE

.

A 54-year-old woman of Siamapa Village in Livingstone District, Southern Zambia, has died after an encounter with an elephant.

Ministry of Tourism Principal Public Relations Officer Nelly Banda has confirmed the incident, identifying the deceased as Lozia Ngawaka.

Ms. Banda says the attack occurred between 22:00 and 23:00 hours on April 24, 2026.

Other details are that the victim and her husband were walking from Mukuni Palace to Siamapa Village when they encountered a roaming elephant in a known wildlife corridor. The animal reportedly charged, killing her, while her husband survived.

The Department of National Parks and Wildlife has since dispatched a team to verify the incident and ensure community safety. The body has been taken to Batoka Mortuary.

Preliminary findings suggest the elephant may have reacted defensively, likely due to close proximity and poor visibility at night.
