A 32-year-old man of Mansa District has been arrested for murdering his 59-year-old uncle in Chief Kalaba’s chiefdom.
The deceased is reported to have gone missing in January after he went to check on his maize payment from the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) but never returned.
The suspect, who is the deceased’s nephew, had earlier informed relatives that his uncle had travelled to the Democratic Republic of Congo for business, in what is believed to have been a ploy to prevent family members from visiting the residence and discovering the murder.
He has since confessed to killing his uncle with a hammer, taking his phone, and burying the body within the same yard.
Police have confirmed to Diamond TV in Mansa that the body has been exhumed and the suspect arrested.
Relatives have also told Diamond News in an exclusive interview that the suspect is believed to have deliberately planned the murder in order to access money from the FRA for maize sold to the agency.
