Government has pumped over 1 million United States Dollars into the upgrade of the Kitwe Main Bus Station, a project expected to be completed within 12 months.
The funds have been secured through the Zambia Devolution Support Programme (ZDSP) under the World Bank to transform the dilapidated station into a modern facility and ease congestion in the Central Business District.
In an interview with Diamond News, Kitwe Mayor-Elect Charles Kabwita described the project as long overdue and one that will significantly improve the city’s infrastructure.
Mr. Kabwita has appealed to residents to exercise patience, noting that quality works require time and cannot be completed within twenty-four hours.
He expressed satisfaction that the contractor is already on site and that old structures have been demolished.
Meanwhile, bus drivers operating from the temporary site have welcomed the development but called on the local contractor to ensure quality works are delivered within the stipulated timeframe.
