The National Biosafety Authority (NBA) has seized and destroyed twenty-five bags of 25 kilograms of mealie meal that contained genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in Kazungula, Southern Zambia.

In a statement, NBA Communications Officer, Sandra Lombe confirms that the mealie meal was intercepted by inspectors and other enforcement agencies.

The products were seized as they were placed on the market without prior authorization from the Authority.

She said the two involved traders were arrested by the Zambia Police and taken to court where it was determined that the products be destroyed.

Preliminary findings indicate that an unknown foreign trucker is believed to have offloaded the goods onto the Zambian market.
