In a bizarre incident, a seven-month-old infant has been discovered in a house sucking the breast of the deceased mother, Dorcas Chirwa, aged 20, of Kanakantapa Resettlement Scheme in Chongwe District.
According to a report by Police Deputy Public Relations Officer, Danny Mwale, the discovery follows a concerned neighbor’s attempt to locate the occupants of the farmhouse whom he had not seen earlier on Sunday.
Mr. Mwale says, the said man noticed that the residence was unusually quiet but inside a child was heard crying, hence prompting the neighbor to mobilize help and force their way inside, only to find the unthinkable.
He says, Dorcas Chirwa was found dead lying in a pool of blood while her infant was sucking from her breast.
It was also discovered that the woman’s husband was hanging lifeless from the ceiling, in apparent suicide.
The report further says the deaths were a result of a marital dispute in which the husband is alleged to have used a stool to kill his wife.
The couple was a caretaker of the said farmhouse whose owner is reported to be out of the country.
The baby has been handed to Chongwe District Hospital for care, while the police have launched an investigation to locate relatives of the duo.
