MUNDUBILE, 17 OTHERS RETURN TO COURT IN BAIL BID

.

The Lusaka High Court is this morning expected to resume hearing a constitutional bail application by opposition presidential candidate Brian Mundubile, his running mate Makebi Zulu and 16 others, who are seeking release from detention pending trial.

The 18 applicants have been in custody since August 14, 2026, over alleged treason, sedition and terrorism-related offences.

They have sued Attorney General Mulilo Kabesha and Director of Public Prosecutions Gilbert Phiri, arguing that their continued detention without trial violates their constitutional rights.

The hearing resumes after the State challenged the court’s jurisdiction to entertain the application through a constitutional petition, an objection the defence is still responding to.

Makebi Zulu also opted to represent himself, meanwhile the Solwezi High Court also ordered the transfer of the sedition case involving Mundubile and Zulu from Solwezi to Lusaka, stating that Lusaka is the more appropriate and convenient territorial forum to hear and determine the matter.
