National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) presidential candidate Brian Mundubile and his running mate, Makebi Zulu, are expected to appear before the Solwezi Magistrate’s Court today for plea and possible commencement of trial in a matter in which they are facing charges of seditious practices.
The matter was adjourned to October 5 and 6, 2026, after the two appeared before Principal Resident Magistrate Mambwe Mukonde on September 25. Proceedings could not proceed at the time after Mundubile’s lawyers were not present, while Zulu also sought an adjournment to allow the defence adequate time to prepare.
Mundubile and Zulu were formally charged with seditious practices in September under Section 57 of the Penal Code, Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.
According to reports on the case, Mundubile is accused of making a Facebook post claiming that the NRPUP was leading the 2026 presidential election based on the party’s Parallel Vote Tabulation and calling on the Electoral Commission of Zambia to resume vote counting after the process was suspended.
Zulu, meanwhile, is accused of making a social media post stating that Mundubile would address the nation and urging members of the public to remain on standby.
The State had indicated that it was ready to proceed with the matter during the previous appearance, with Director of Public Prosecutions Gilbert Phiri leading the prosecution team. The court subsequently granted the adjournment and set October 5 and 6 for further proceedings.
Today’s proceedings are therefore expected to determine whether the accused will take plea and whether the trial can commence.
