Kanyama Member of Parliament Cleopatra Hamaambo has backed the Lusaka City Council’s Operation Clear Path following a visit to traders affected by the ongoing enforcement campaign.
Hamaambo took time to engage traders as the Council, in collaboration with the Zambia Police Service, moves to clear streets of unauthorised trading and relocate vendors to designated markets.
The Kanyama lawmaker says efforts to restore cleanliness and order in Lusaka must be supported, while the concerns of traders affected by the exercise should also be heard.
Her visit comes as the Lusaka City Council steps up enforcement against street vending, citing the need to improve sanitation, public safety and the general appearance of the city.
The Council has maintained that traders must operate from designated trading spaces and has warned against resistance to the enforcement exercise.
Hamaambo’s support adds to growing calls for stakeholders to work with the local authority in restoring order in the city while ensuring that affected traders are engaged in the process.
