Energy and commodities group Mercuria and Africa-focused integrated energy company Exergy Energy have signed a US$250 million investment deal to finance power generation and transmission projects in Zambia and across Southern and Eastern Africa.
The companies announced the deal in Lusaka on September 25, 2026, describing it as one of the largest private capital commitments to Zambia’s power sector.
Subject to regulatory approvals, the investment will finance projects being developed through Exergy’s subsidiaries, including Lunzuwa Power Company and Lusitu Transmission and Distribution Company, with several projects already underway.
The investment is expected to support Zambia’s target of generating 10,000 megawatts of electricity by 2031, as outlined under the Grow Zambia agenda.
Exergy says its power infrastructure pipeline will also support reliable electricity supply for key sectors including mining, agriculture, manufacturing, tourism and industry.
The companies say the partnership will combine Exergy’s operational expertise in Zambia and the region with Mercuria’s global energy trading, market knowledge and financial capabilities.
The two companies further say Zambia’s location within the Southern African Power Pool and its growing links to East and Central Africa position the country as a potential hub for regional power trade.
