National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) President Brian Mundubile says he feels sorry for police officers whom he believes are being forced to carry out unlawful instructions.
Addressing the media, Mr. Mundubile says many officers are operating under immense pressure and stress, particularly when they are instructed to stop him and his party from entering certain towns during campaign activities.
He says officers carry out such directives despite knowing they are not lawful, adding that the situation places them in a difficult position.
Mr. Mundubile, however, commends officers who continue to uphold professional standards, saying there are many dedicated personnel within the service who deserve protection and support.
He says while there are some bad elements in the police service, many officers remain committed to serving the public professionally.
He says an NRPUP administration would seek to depoliticise the police service and strengthen professionalism to enable officers to perform their duties without political interference.
Mr. Mundubile adds that his government would improve the welfare of police officers through better accommodation, transport, uniforms and other conditions of service, alongside a merit-based recruitment system.
