Ministry of Information and Media Permanent Secretary Thabo Kawana has urged journalists to prioritize accuracy over speed in their reporting ahead of the August 2026 general elections.
Speaking at an Independent Broadcasting Authority, IBA, media training workshop in Ndola, Mr. Kawana warned that the rise of artificial intelligence, misinformation and disinformation on social media is increasing the risk of false reporting.
He said it is important to report first if possible, but to report accurately all the time in order not to mislead the public.
He also addressed European Union election observers present at the event, stating that the peace of the nation is being threatened by unscrupulous individuals determined to see the country go up in flames.
He added that some of the people involved in spreading malicious propaganda have fled the country and are being harbored in some European countries, hence the need for them to be brought back so that they can face the law.
Meanwhile, IBA Board Member Bishop Benson Banda has called on media practitioners to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, integrity and responsibility during the election period.
