Zambia Must Prosper Vice President Milner Katolo has questioned the continued detention of Liberal Democrats Party President and former Zambia Security Intelligence Service Director General Xavier Frankling Chungu, describing the development as concerning and calling for due process to prevail.
Speaking over Chungu’s continued stay in Police custody for five days since Thursday last week, Mr Katolo argues that if law enforcement agencies have a credible case against the opposition leader and presidential candidate, he should be promptly taken before the courts to answer to the allegations rather than remain in prolonged detention.
He has further raised concern over what he described as an increasing pattern of intimidation of opposition political figures ahead of the 2026 general elections.
The Zambia Must Prosper Vice President also cited the recent experiences involving EFF leader Kasonde Mwenda and raised concern over the case involving former Local Government Minister Gary Nkombo, questioning circumstances surrounding allegations linked to K20,000 and assult that were reported after complainants themselves had allegedly faced criminal charges, describing the matter as suspicious.
Meanwhile, Police say Mr Chungu remains in custody after a warn and caution statement was recorded from him for the offence of Communication of Certain Information Contrary to Section 4(1) of the State Security Act, Chapter 111 of the Laws of Zambia.
According to the Zambia Police Mr Chungu is alleged to have, disclosed information entrusted to him in confidence by virtue of his former Government position following his appearance on a programme
