POLICE PICK UP THREE SUSPECTS IN CHIPANGALI REFEREE MURDER

Police in Chipangali District have picked up and detained three suspects in connection with the murder of Donald Tonga, a referee on Thursday, May 7, 2026.

Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba has td Diamond News that the three are in police custody and investigations have advanced in arresting more.

Meanwhile The Football Association of Zambia FAZ has suspended all non-affiliated football leagues and tournaments in the province.

Nyirenda stressed that organisers must seek FAZ permission to ensure safety guidelines are followed.

He warned that anyone hosting unauthorised football events will face prosecution, regardless of their status.

FAZ has expressed deep sorrow over the brutal killing of 55-year-old referee Donald Tonga, who was allegedly beaten to death by players and supporters during a community tournament in Chipangali.

Eastern Province FAZ chairperson Patrick Nyirenda says the association received the tragic news of Donald Tonga, a non-affiliated referee, with sadness who was officiating a replayed match between Mikango United and Leopard United when he was attacked over suspected poor officiating.
