Speaking during the official opening of the media workshop on disaster reporting, Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) National Coordinator, Norman Chipakupaku, says the training comes at a critical time when Zambia continues to face disasters such as floods, industrial accidents and prolonged dry spells.

He has emphasised that the media plays a vital role in delivering timely and accurate information, shaping public response and helping to save lives.

He is urging journalists to report with empathy, avoid sensationalism and ensure balanced coverage, particularly when covering vulnerable groups such as women, children, the elderly and persons with disabilities.

He has further reaffirmed government’s commitment to working with stakeholders, including the Zambia Red Cross Society, WARMA and the Zambia Meteorological Department, to strengthen disaster preparedness and response, adding that the workshop aims to enhance journalists’ capacity in disaster reporting.
