CSOS WARN MINING INVESTORS OVER LOCAL CONTENT VIOLATIONS

.

Some civil society organisations have warned mining investors who are failing to comply with Zambia’s local content regulations, which require firms to prioritise Zambian businesses when awarding contracts.

Speaking at a press briefing held in Lusaka, Advocates for National Development and Democracy (ANDD) Executive Director, Samuel Banda, said some mining companies were not fully adhering to Statutory Instrument 68 under the Local Content Regulations.

He said the continued disregard for these policies could lead to public action.

Mr Banda noted that while the regulations were designed to increase the participation of local companies, there were cases where contracts that could be handled by Zambian firms were still being awarded to foreign entities.

He warned that failure to comply with these rules risks undermining government efforts to grow the economy, create jobs, and strengthen local enterprises in the mining sector.
