FPI URGE HAKAINDE HICHILEMA TO UNEQUIVOCALLY CONDEMN ATTACK ON JOURNALIST

.

The Zambia Free Press Initiative (FPI) has called on President Hakainde Hichilema to unequivocally condemn the attack on Power News Network journalist Alfonso Kasongo, who was assaulted while carrying out his professional duties, allegedly by UPND cadres in Lusaka’s Linda Compound.

In a statement issued by FPI Founder Joan Chirwa, the organization strongly condemned the incident, describing it as a serious violation of press freedom and the rule of law.

FPI noted that video evidence shows Mr. Kasongo identifying himself as a journalist and pleading with his attackers, but the assault continued.

The organization further expressed concern over what it described as a growing pattern of hostility against journalists, citing a recent incident in Mpongwe where media personnel were reportedly harassed in the presence of police officers. It warned that such acts threaten the safety and independence of the media, especially ahead of elections.

FPI has since urged the Zambia Police Service to carry out a swift and impartial investigation and bring all those responsible to justice, while calling on political parties to ensure their members respect journalists’ rights and allow them to operate freely without fear or intimidation.
