MUNG’ANDU CALLS FOR COMPENSATION IN WILDLIFE ACT AMENDMENT

.

Chama South Member of Parliament Davison Mung’andu has called for the amendment of the Wildlife Act to include compensation for people affected by human wildlife conflict.

Speaking in support of a motion to adopt the Report of the Committee on Energy, Water Development and Tourism on the review of human wildlife conflict in Game Management Areas, Mr. Mung’andu says there has been a sharp rise in incidents involving dangerous encounters between people and wild animals.

He says amending the Act would ensure that individuals whose lives and livelihoods are negatively affected receive compensation.

Mr. Mung’andu added that many residents in areas prone to human wildlife conflict are farmers who depend solely on their agricultural produce for survival.

He says he wishes the same level of effort wildlife officers apply in apprehending illegal hunters could also be directed towards preventing loss of human life due to wildlife conflict.
