CASHLESS BORDER PLAN SET TO IMPROVE TRADE EFFICIENCY

.

The government says it plans to introduce cashless payment systems and enhanced surveillance technology at key border posts to improve trade efficiency and security along the Central Corridor.

Ministry of Transport and Logistics Permanent Secretary Fredrick Mwalusaka says the move is aimed at addressing operational challenges faced by transporters, including customs bottlenecks, congestion, and security threats such as truck vandalism and robbery.

Speaking during the Validation and Dissemination Workshop on Enhancing Trade-Related Security along the Southern Route of the Central Corridor in Lusaka, Mr. Mwalusaka said the corridor remains a critical trade route connecting Zambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Tanzania.

He revealed that the government has already reduced police checkpoints along the Nakonde–Ndola route from eleven to three to facilitate smoother cargo movement.

Meanwhile, Central Corridor Transit Transport Facilitation Agency Director of Customs and Trade Facilitation Charles Mtonga said shifting to digital payment systems will help curb revenue leakages, strengthen border security, and improve efficiency in cross-border trade operations.
