Several maize crops have been washed away by floods in Kasiya Agricultural Camp in Livingstone District SouthernZambia, raising fears of food insecurity among farmers and local communities.
A check by Diamond News in Natebe and Sons of Thunder areas has established that a local dam has burst its banks, causing streams to overflow into nearby fields and destroy crops.
Affected farmers describe the situation as the worst they have experienced, warning that delayed government intervention could worsen food insecurity in the area.
Kasiya Ward Councillor Sydney Mwamba has since appealed to relevant authorities to urgently step in and assist the affected farmers before the situation deteriorates further.
Meanwhile, floods have damaged infrastructure across the southern region, displacing more than 1,000 families. Monze District has recorded the highest number of victims, with over 700 people affected.
Government has provided alternative shelter and relief to an initial group of victims but has yet to extend assistance to those recently affected.
