The National Biosafety Authority says it is possible for genetically modified organisms (GMOs) to contribute to the attainment of the Grow Zambia Agenda through research, innovation and responsible application of biotechnology.
Speaking on behalf of Acting Chief Executive Officer Lillian Kambafwile Nkamu during a stakeholder engagement meeting in Lusaka, Senior Biosafety Inspector Elias Chipulu says biotechnology can be harnessed beyond agriculture, including in the medical field.
Mr. Chipulu says the use of GMOs can support national development, but much depends on researchers, scientists, and government working together to explore and responsibly apply the technology.
He says biotechnology should therefore, not only be viewed from an agricultural perspective, as it also has applications in medicine and other sectors.
The National Biosafety Authority has meanwhile cautioned permit holders against treating compliance as a once-off exercise, urging them to maintain valid permits, comply with permit conditions, and cooperate with inspections and monitoring.
Mr. Chipulu says timely renewal of permits is also important, urging permit holders to begin the process early to avoid lapses in authorisation.
He says prospective permit holders should engage the Authority early and familiarise themselves with the requirements before commencing any regulated activities.
