The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has announced that it is in the final stages of preparations to carry out the delimitation of constituencies, a critical step to ensure equitable representation ahead of the August 2026 general elections.
ECZ Chief Electoral Officer Brown Kasaro made the disclosure, explaining that the exercise is being undertaken in full compliance with the Constitution of Zambia (Amendment) Act No. 13 of 2025. The process aims to review and potentially redraw boundaries in oversized constituencies to improve development delivery and fair political representation across the country.
“The delimitation will be conducted with full engagement of all relevant stakeholders, including political parties, civil society, traditional leaders, and the general public,” Kasaro stated. “We will provide timely updates throughout the process to maintain transparency.”
Kasaro stressed the urgency of the task, assuring stakeholders that the ECZ is prioritizing completion well before the scheduled certification of the 2026 Register of Voters on April 30, 2026, as outlined in the Commission’s 2026 General Election Roadmap.
This boundary review follows recent constitutional amendments and builds on earlier ECZ recommendations to address population imbalances in Zambia’s current 156 constituencies. The exercise is seen as essential for enhancing democratic participation and effective governance in rapidly growing areas.
The ECZ has committed to keeping the public informed as preparations advance, underscoring its role in delivering credible, inclusive elections in 2026.
