The Zambia Metrology Agency (ZMA) has taken decisive action against short-weight products, seizing approximately 100 loaves of bread from Yatu Bakery in the bustling Kalingalinga township following a routine inspection on January 8, 2026.
ZMA Senior Public Relations Officer Sandra Mwila confirmed that inspectors targeted two popular varieties: Yatu Sliced Bread (labelled as 800 grams) and Super Big Loaf (labelled as 700 grams). However, precise measurements revealed that the actual weights fell short of the declared quantities, violating consumer protection standards.
“This non-compliance contravenes the Metrology Act, which mandates that manufacturers and traders ensure packaged goods match their stated net weight,” Ms. Mwila explained. “Consumers deserve fair value for their money, and ZMA remains committed to protecting them from such practices.”
In line with legal provisions, the seized bread was disposed of through the Magistrate Court to prevent it from re-entering the market.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of accurate weighing in everyday essentials like bread, a staple food for many Zambian households. ZMA continues its nationwide enforcement efforts to curb underweight packaging and promote fair trade.
