A 29 year old woman, identified as Lorraine Ngezu, has died after a riverbank collapsed on her while she was engaged in illegal gold mining along the Kasitu River in Chieftainess Mweenda’s area, Chikankata District.
According to police, the tragic incident occurred on October 27, 2025, around 17:15 hours at Lusitu River.
Southern Province Police Commissioner, Auxensio Daka has confirmed the incident, explaining that the deceased and another woman had been mining at the site for three consecutive days.
On the day of the accident, as they were preparing to leave, the riverbank suddenly gave way, burying Ngezu beneath the soil.
Her colleague immediately called for help from other miners, who managed to retrieve the body and later reported the incident to Malabo Police Post.
The body has since been deposited in Chikankata Mission Hospital Mortuary awaiting postmortem and burial.
