The Majocama Bridge in Lusaka’s Kabanana area, which was washed away by heavy rains in February 2025, has been fully rebuilt and officially commissioned by the Zambia National Service (ZNS) Commander, Lieutenant General Engineer Maliti Solochi II. The reconstruction was undertaken by ZNS engineers, who also rehabilitated 1.2 kilometers of surrounding roads, with the entire project costing K1 million.
The Majocama Bridge is a vital infrastructure for the community, serving over 2,000 residents daily, including schoolchildren and workers. Following its collapse, many locals—especially students from Mejocama Secondary School—were left stranded, with some unable to attend classes due to the lack of a safe alternative route.
During the commissioning ceremony, Lt Gen. Solochi commended the ZNS officers for their hard work and dedication in restoring the bridge within a short period. He also urged the community to take responsibility for safeguarding the bridge against vandalism, stressing that public infrastructure belongs to the people and should be protected for future generations.
Also present at the event was Mandevu Member of Parliament, Christopher Shakafuswa, who welcomed the reconstruction, stating that the bridge’s destruction had severely disrupted children’s access to school and general mobility in the area. He expressed gratitude to ZNS and the government for prioritizing infrastructure development that directly impacts communities.
Meanwhile, pupils from Mejocama Secondary School shared their relief and appreciation, saying that they had struggled to attend classes after the bridge was washed away. Now that it has been restored, they can resume their studies without fear or difficulty.
The successful reconstruction of the Majocama Bridge highlights the government’s commitment to infrastructure development, particularly in disaster-prone areas. Authorities have called on residents to remain vigilant and report any signs of vandalism or misuse to ensure the bridge remains functional for years to come.
