ZAMBIAN TRUCK DRIVERS STUCK IN DRC AS UNREST ESCALATES

.

Some Zambian truck drivers remain stuck in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) due to unrest that has disrupted major transport routes.

Drivers have parked their trucks in various locations as it is unsafe to continue travelling, with many stranded for weeks awaiting guidance from their companies and improvements in security.

George Sichinga has told Diamond News that they have been unable to move, and his company directed them to park at a mine in Likasi, where he has been camping for nearly 21 days.

Other Zambian drivers are stranded in Kolwezi.

Another driver, Golden Siwakwi, says he was arrested after defending himself against an attack by a Congolese national but has since been released, highlighting the security challenges faced by Zambian drivers in the area.

Authorities in Zambia are expected to hold a meeting with DRC officials over the situation.
