Zambian Experts in Nuclear Energy have noted the need for high level dialogue in the transition to clean energy sources.

The Zambian delegation at the fifth International Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Power in the 21st Century in Washington, D.C, United States is led by Chief Biomedical Scientist at Maina Soko Military Hospital, Colonel Emmanuel Simenti, Lieutenant Colonel Chongo Zaza who is Deputy Director, Research Directorate at the Zambia Air Force and Ministry of Technology and Science, Engineer William Musosha.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is hosting the conference.

Colonel Simenti and his delegation called on Zambia’s Ambassador to the United States of America, His Excellency, Lazarous Kapambwe, at the Zambian Embassy.

Colonel Simenti said Zambia’s use of nuclear power in Electricity, Agriculture and Medical can never be over emphasized.

He said Zambia is looking for a developer for the nuclear center, adding that progress has been made.

“So, this conference has provided an opportunity to further look at nuclear energy in transition to clean energy sources. We can use nuclear energy to help generate electricity, promote agriculture and medical. As a country, we are looking for a developer to the nuclear center, however, we are moving closer to find the developer,” said Colonel Simenti.

And Lieutenant Colonel Zaza said there is need to invest in nuclear technology research.

“Nuclear technology is needed for Zambia not to be left behind. So, we need to invest in nuclear research. The country needs to diversify to engage in nuclear technology field,” said Lt. Colonel Zaza.

Meanwhile, Ambassador Kapambwe expressed happiness that Zambia was among a few African countries attending the conference.

The conference provides a forum for ministers, policy makers, senior officials and experts to engage in high-level dialogue on the role of nuclear energy in the transition to clean energy sources, and its contribution to sustainable development and climate change mitigation.
