Zambia has used the opening of the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA81) to pursue new diplomatic partnerships aimed at expanding markets, investment and economic opportunities.
Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Mr Mulambo Haimbe, who is representing President Hakainde Hichilema at UNGA81 in New York, has established diplomatic relations with Uruguay and Vanuatu.
The two agreements are expected to open avenues for cooperation in areas including agriculture, trade and investment, climate change, eco-tourism and cultural exchanges.
Haimbe says Zambia’s diplomacy must contribute directly to the country’s economic growth.
Zambia has also held bilateral talks with Malawi and Cuba, focusing on trade, investment, infrastructure, energy and connectivity, as well as continued cooperation in health and education.
The country has further engaged the European Union and the United Nations on development cooperation and global governance.
Meanwhile, Health Minister Mr Roma Chilengi has participated in discussions on reforms to the global health architecture, with Zambia supporting an approach that strengthens countries’ own health systems and priorities.
Zambia has also sought support for its bid for a seat on the United Nations Human Rights Council for 2027 to 2029.
Minister Haimbe is expected to deliver Zambia’s national statement to the UN General Assembly on Monday, September 28, with investment, energy and infrastructure engagements continuing throughout the week.
