Zambia is developing a backup project that will enable importation of 300 megawatts of power from Tanzania through the Kasama-Nakonde connection within two years.
The project will be used to address power shortages in likely events of dry spells.
The import capacity is expected to increase to 500 megawatts after two years once the second line reaches Nakonde.
Zesco Chief Engineer Masoka Daka who is also the Project Site Manager of Kabwe-Pensulo Line Two says a portion of the initial 300 megawatts could be available just nine months from July.
Additionally, independent power suppliers, including solar plants in Central Province, are set to connect to the national grid.
