ZAMBIA RECORDS FIRST MPOX DEATH AS INFANT SUCCUMBS TO THE DISEASE

By Victoria Kayeye Yambani

Zambia has recorded its first Mpox-related death following the tragic passing of an 8-month-old infant at Chipata Level One Hospital. The Ministry of Health confirmed that this marks the first fatality since the outbreak of the viral disease was reported in the country.

Mpox Cases on the Rise

The latest reports indicate that seven new cases of Mpox have been identified in the past week alone, with infections spreading across multiple provinces, including Copperbelt, Lusaka, Muchinga, and Western Provinces. The continued rise in cases has raised concerns among health authorities, prompting an urgent response to contain the outbreak.

Government’s Response to the Crisis

Minister of Health Elijah Muchima has reassured the public that the government is taking swift action to control the spread of Mpox and prevent further fatalities. Among the key measures being implemented are:

  • Training and mentorship programs for frontline health workers to strengthen their capacity in diagnosing and managing cases.
  • Active case searches and contact tracing to identify and monitor individuals who may have been exposed to the virus.
  • Risk communication and community engagement to educate the public on symptoms, prevention methods, and the importance of early medical intervention.
  • Prepositioning of essential medical supplies in affected regions to ensure healthcare facilities are well-equipped to handle new cases.

Understanding Mpox and Its Impact

Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a viral disease that spreads through close contact with infected individuals, animals, or contaminated materials. Symptoms typically include fever, body aches, swollen lymph nodes, and a rash that progresses to painful lesions. While the disease is often self-limiting, severe cases—especially in infants, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals—can lead to serious complications or death.

Call for Vigilance and Prevention

With the first recorded death in the country, health officials are urging Zambians to remain vigilant and adhere to preventive measures, including practicing good hygiene, avoiding contact with infected individuals, and seeking immediate medical attention if symptoms appear.

The Ministry of Health continues to monitor the situation closely and is committed to curbing the outbreak to protect public health. Further updates will be provided as efforts to contain the disease progress.
