ZAMBIA REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO UN SECURITY COUNCIL REFORM

.

Zambia has reaffirmed its commitment to the Common African Position, calling for urgent and equitable reform of the United Nations Security Council, emphasizing the need for Charter amendments and a review of the veto power.

Speaking on behalf of President Hakainde Hichilema at the 13th Ministerial Meeting of the Committee of Ten (C-10) Heads of State and Government on UN Reform, Minister of Defense Ambrose Lufuma recognized the leadership of Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio, the Coordinator of the C-10, for his dedication to advancing Africa’s reform agenda.

Mr. Lufuma highlighted the historical exclusion of Africa from permanent membership on the Council, despite the continent accounting for over 60 percent of the Council’s agenda.

He stressed the urgency of correcting this imbalance by rallying unified support for the Ezulwini Consensus and Sirte Declaration, which call for two permanent and five non-permanent African seats on the Council.

He called for actionable steps to break the current deadlock in the Intergovernmental Negotiations (IGN) process, urging unity among African states.
