Zambia has been elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the 2027–2029 term, in a development expected to strengthen the country’s role in promoting and protecting human rights globally.
The election was held today Tuesday, 13th October 2026, during the ongoing 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly at the UN headquarters in New York, United States of America.
In a press statement, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Mulambo Haimbe says Zambia’s election provides an opportunity to contribute to the global human rights agenda, strengthen international cooperation and advance human dignity, equality, justice, democracy and the rule of law.
Mr Haimbe says Zambia’s membership is anchored on the belief that human rights, good governance and the rule of law are essential to sustainable development and lasting peace.
He cites national reforms and policies, including the abolition of the death penalty, strengthened protection frameworks for women, children and persons with disabilities, as well as expanded access to education and social support programmes.
Mr Haimbe adds that Zambia will use its tenure to promote dialogue, cooperation and consensus among member states while advocating for the rights of women, children and other vulnerable groups.
He says the country will also champion the right to development and strengthen the links between human rights, climate resilience and sustainable development.
The Minister further states that Zambia’s membership presents an opportunity to strengthen human rights protection locally while contributing to a more inclusive and responsive Human Rights Council, particularly in addressing the needs of developing countries.
