The governments of Zambia and Tanzania have agreed on a new operational arrangement aimed at guaranteeing a predictable and reliable fuel supply to Zambia through the Port of Dar es Salaam.
Under the agreement, one fuel vessel carrying more than 100,000 metric tons will be berthed and offloaded at the port between the 15th and 25th of every month.
The Tanzania Ports Authority will ensure timely offloading of the vessel to support uninterrupted petroleum supply to Zambia.
The agreement was jointly announced on Thursday, 15 January 2025, in Dar es Salaam by Tanzania’s Minister of Energy, Deogratius Ndejembi, and Zambia’s Minister of Energy, Makozo Chikote, following a high-level technical engagement involving Permanent Secretaries and technical experts from both countries.
The two ministers emphasized the need for strict adherence to the agreed operational measures in order to sustain efficient fuel logistics.
Mr Ndejembi said the decision will enhance the security and efficiency of Zambia’s diesel supply, while also strengthening bilateral cooperation in other energy sectors such as electricity and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).
On the other hand, Mr Chikote praised Tanzania for its continued cooperation, noting that over 85 percent of Zambia’s diesel is transported through the TAZAMA Oil Pipeline from Dar es Salaam to Ndola.
