Youth Games Welfare Crisis: Athletes Protest, Ministry Apologizes

.

Athletes from all ten provinces have raised concerns over their welfare and accommodation during the ongoing 2025 National Youth Games in Lusaka.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Diamond Sports, Boxing Judge Chewe Gloria has revealed that upon arrival in Lusaka on Monday night, some athletes were forced to sleep in buses while others slept on desks, conditions she says could negatively affect performance.

Gloria has also expressed concern over meal arrangements, noting that boxers require timely meals to properly prepare for their bouts, warning that competing while hungry poses serious risks to athletes’ health and performance, and calling on the National Sports Council of Zambia to urgently address the matter.

In response, Minister of Youth, Sport and Arts, Elvis Nkandu, speaking during the official opening of the games on Tuesday, apologized to the athletes for the challenges faced and has assured them that he has directed relevant authorities to resolve the issues.

The 2025 National Youth Games, being held at the OYDC Zambia Sports Development Centre, will run from 16 to 18 December 2025.
