US OFFERS ZAMBIA UP TO 2 BILLION DOLLARS IN GRANTS

.

The United States, under the Trump administration, has offered Zambia grants of up to 2 billion dollars over the next five years, anchored on the principle of reciprocity.

Speaking at State House when he met Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema, U.S. Assistant Secretary for Economic, Energy and Business Affairs Caleb Orr said the package is a bold and targeted form of assistance aimed at cementing systemic reforms and strengthening health service delivery in ways that reduce long-term dependence on foreign aid.

Mr. Orr explained that the redesigned Millennium Challenge Corporation compact will help unlock Zambia’s agriculture sector, expand road networks linking farms and mines to markets, and support value chains and value addition.

He added that the United States is seeking partnerships with countries committed to creating conditions that attract U.S. private-sector investment, enabling both sides to benefit from shared economic goals.

And President Hichilema said Zambia is ready to reset relations with the United States and hopes to reach a successful conclusion to support the country’s economic potential.

Zambia was among the African countries affected by former U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to pause foreign aid to some nations.
