The ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) has issued a stern warning against indiscipline among its members in Eastern Province, following dissatisfaction over the recent restructuring of its provincial leadership.
The shake-up comes in the wake of the UPND’s defeat in the Petauke parliamentary by-election, where the opposition Tonse Alliance emerged victorious. In response to the loss, the party leadership dissolved the elected Provincial Committee and appointed a new management team to realign its structures ahead of future political engagements.
However, the decision has sparked dissatisfaction among some members, who have accused the new leadership of sidelining those perceived to have supported the dissolved committee. Among the critics is Patrick Banda, a UPND member and former Lusangazi District Council Chairperson, who has raised concerns over what he describes as exclusionary practices within the party. Banda alleges that loyal party members are being left out of key activities and decision-making processes due to their previous affiliations.
In response to these allegations, UPND Eastern Province Chairperson Peter Phiri has dismissed the claims, stating that the new leadership operates with transparency and maintains an open-door policy. Mr. Phiri, who also serves as Minister of Eastern Province, emphasized that all party members are welcome to engage with the provincial leadership and voice their concerns through proper channels. He reaffirmed that the restructuring process was carried out in the best interest of strengthening the party’s presence in the region.
Additionally, Mr. Phiri warned that the party will not tolerate any form of indiscipline or actions that threaten internal unity. He urged members to remain committed to the party’s core principles and work together towards strengthening UPND’s support base in Eastern Province. He also encouraged open dialogue within party structures to address grievances constructively rather than resorting to public disputes.
The leadership transition within UPND Eastern Province signals the party’s efforts to consolidate its grassroots structures and maintain stability ahead of future elections. While dissenting voices remain, the party’s stance on discipline and unity will likely play a crucial role in shaping its performance in the region going forward.
