The United Party for National Development (UPND) has secured a significant victory in the Kawambwa Council Chairperson By-Election, reinforcing its influence in the region. UPND candidate Musa Titus garnered 8,589 votes, outpacing his closest rival, Ivo Mpasa of the Socialist Party, who received 6,054 votes. The win has bolstered UPND’s foothold in Kawambwa, a region often marked by political tension and strong competition among various political factions.

The by-election for the council chairperson position became necessary after the former chairperson, Kalumba Chifumbe, was sentenced to five years in prison. Chifumbe’s imprisonment stemmed from charges of malicious damage to property, a consequence of the violence that erupted in Kawambwa during Zambia’s August 2021 general elections. The unrest that plagued the election period was characterized by tensions between competing political parties, leading to various incidents of vandalism and civil disorder in several parts of the country. Chifumbe’s conviction is part of the government’s efforts to address these incidents of election-related violence, signaling a continued crackdown on politically motivated disruptions and property damage.

The Kawambwa region has traditionally been a politically charged zone, with various parties vying for control due to its strategic significance in Luapula Province. UPND’s win in this by-election is seen as a crucial achievement, as it reflects the party’s growing acceptance and influence in areas previously dominated by other political entities. This victory is likely to be celebrated by UPND supporters as a testament to the party’s resilience and appeal across different regions in Zambia.

For the Socialist Party, which came second, the by-election result is a reminder of the challenges it faces in penetrating UPND-dominated regions. Despite efforts to expand its base and mobilize support, the Socialist Party has yet to secure widespread popularity. Nevertheless, obtaining over 6,000 votes signals that there remains a level of support and engagement among Kawambwa’s electorate, potentially laying a foundation for future efforts to strengthen its presence in the region.

Political analysts are interpreting the results as a reflection of shifting dynamics in Zambian politics. UPND’s continued victories indicate that the party is consolidating its power base, even in traditionally competitive or opposition-leaning regions. The outcome may also signal growing confidence among the electorate in UPND’s leadership, as well as a shift in Kawambwa’s political landscape towards stability and support for the ruling party.

As Musa Titus assumes his new role as Kawambwa’s Council Chairperson, expectations will be high for him to deliver on his promises and address the needs of the local community. With UPND in control, there is potential for increased government investment and development projects in the area, which could strengthen the party’s position further in future elections. The victory serves as an opportunity for UPND to showcase its governance capabilities, aiming to win over residents by addressing pressing issues such as infrastructure, education, healthcare, and economic opportunities for the people of Kawambwa.
